About
I was doing more reviewing than anything else on Bukkhead, so I decided to give the reviews their own blog. Here it is. I am dedicated to reviewing everything. Mostly movies. It all started in late May ’07 when a friend of a friend was looking for a writer, someone who could watch a few movies at the SIFF and write some reviews for a newspaper in Rhode Island. I’d never written formal reviews before, but I said I’d give it a shot. I wrote a test review of Little Children, and the editor liked enough to give me the gig. So I got a press pass, heaed to the SIFF, wrote some reviews, and got hooked.
Each reviews is timed, more or less, to when I saw the movie, ate at the restaurant, played the game, read the book, etc. And they’re all 500 words. That’s the goal: no more, no less (not counting the info material at the top of each review). Sometimes I reflect on the subject of review, sometimes I’m more academically critical, sometimes I’m just blabbing like a monkey. For a quick snippet, each rating is one to five stars (half stars are allowed).
- 5 stars: this is a must-see/eat/play/read/etc. Flawless execution.
- 4 stars: this is a damned good job. No complaints.
- 3 stars: pedestrian but not too bad. Take it or leave it.
- 2 stars: serious errors, lack of precision, not to be sought after.
- 1 star: almost insultingly bad. Bottom of the barrel, to be avoided.
And yes, as arrogant as this is to say, my services as a reviewer are available for hire.
